The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has taken a major step toward improving its disaster response by introducing drones and modern rescue equipment to better handle flood emergencies across the province.
In a recent review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) showcased how drones will be used to deliver essential supplies — such as life jackets, ropes, and first aid — to areas affected by flooding.
“We’re focusing on early response and smart solutions to save lives,” said Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah.
“These drones will allow us to reach places that are otherwise inaccessible during floods.”
The Chief Secretary also stressed the importance of public awareness. He instructed officials to intensify safety campaigns, especially warning people not to go near rivers during heavy rains or flood alerts.
To ensure tourist safety, the government has made it mandatory for hotels and guesthouses to keep life jackets and emergency kits available at all times. The Tourism Department will also issue regular travel advisories to help visitors stay informed and safe.
In addition to tech upgrades, the KP government is taking preventive steps to reduce flood risks. These include:
- Demarcating river boundaries to stop illegal construction
- Conducting mock drills for rescue teams
- Training local communities on emergency preparedness
“We must be ready at all times,” Shahab emphasized.
“All departments must stay active in high-risk zones and take firm action against any encroachments.”
These efforts reflect KP’s commitment to using technology and proactive planning to minimize casualties and improve disaster management in flood-prone regions.
