Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a major step to address teacher shortages in schools by allowing the transfer of surplus teachers to institutions that need staff. This marks the launch of a province-wide teacher rationalisation drive.

According to the School Education Department, the process has officially started from today, with surplus teachers now being reassigned to schools where their services are needed most.

Officials clarified that only teacher placements will be changed—the current sanctioned posts in each school will remain untouched. The move aims to ensure better use of available teaching resources and improve the quality of education in public schools across Punjab.

Teacher Transfers Cut to 25,000 After Union Pressure

The initial rationalisation plan involved relocating around 47,000 teachers, but the number has now been reduced to 25,000 after strong pushback from teacher associations and unions.

According to officials, those teachers identified as surplus have already been notified. To address concerns and make the process smoother, the School Education Department will allow affected teachers to submit their preferred school choices during the relocation process.

This is part of an effort to balance staffing across Punjab’s schools while being mindful of teachers’ convenience and preferences.
